Mattie Hopkins Brazier
Mattie Mildred Hopkins Brazier age 101 years, 11 months, 363 days, passed away to eternal life on Friday March 7, 2014, at the home in Sandusky, Illinois. Mattie was born March 9, 1912, in Miller City, Illinois to Henry and Lula Presley Hopkins. She later moved to Henderson, KY. She relocated back to Miller City, Illinois where she and Archie Brazier were united on December 24, 1927.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four children, Kermit Brazier, James Brazier, Archie Brazier, Jr. and Mearl Herron. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
She confessed her hope in Christ at the early age of 12 and was baptized while living in Henderson, KY. Her faith was Missionary Baptist. After moving back to Illinois she joined Free Will Baptist under the leadership of Rev. O.H. Henderson working in the church. She later moved her membership to Lake Milligan Baptist Baptist Church. When Lake Milligan closed, her membership was moved to Pleasant Grove, Klondike, Illinois. She served on several committees including the Mothers Board, Willing Workers, Mission and Pastors Aid.
Mattie Brazier a long time resident of Southern Illinois worked as a nurse aid at Mary Brown Nursing Home in Cairo, Illinois and Gladys Grissom Nursing Home in Tamms, Illinois before retirement.
Mattie was a testimony of power and strength. She liked visiting the sick and shut-ins at Hodges Park, Illinois and the surrounding area, having prayer before leaving and talking about the goodness of God. Her number one goal was to lead others to Christ. “My favorite reading 57 Psalm is my prayer”, she would say. She wanted everyone to call her “grandma’’. She raised her granson Falvin and granddaughter Ulonda.
Those left to cherish her memories are four sons, Kenneth(Isabella) of San Bernardino, CA, Carl of Oakley, IL, Harland of Paducah, KY, Terry of Sandusky, IL; four daughters, Joyce Carter of Youngstown, OH, Melva Davis of Wichita Falls, TX, Gloria Brazier of Sandusky, IL, and Dorothy(Lonnie) Williford of Cape Girardeau, MO; 31 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Services for Mattie Mildred Brazier were held on Saturday March 15, 2014 at 12:00 noon in the St. John Praise and Worship Center in Pulaski, IL with Min Tyrone Coleman officiating, Rev. Marland Brazier Eulogist and Apostle Larry T. Barnett, Sr. Pastor. Interment was in the Spencer Heights Memorial Park in Mounds, IL. Friends called on Saturday March 15, 2014 at the church from 11:00 am until the funeral hour 12:00 noon. Massie Funeral Home in Mounds, IL was in charge of the arrangements.
