Alexander County engineer Jeff Denny addresses the many concerns the public has voiced about the St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway project Thursday, August 27.  The fllodway project will effect many  facets of the economy and ecosystem in Alexander County and the surrounding areas.   Much of the discussion pertained to a 1,500 foot breech in the levee near Birds Point, MO.   “Closing the gap in the levee would wipe parts of Alexander County off the map,” said Denny. Many citizens spoke in opposition of the St. John’s Bayou project but were in support of the New Madrid aspect of the project. -- George Lamboley | The Cairo Citizen

Members of the community and surrounding areas met at Cairo Junior Senior High School to obtain information from the Army Corps of Engineers Thursday, August 27.  Many in attendance voiced their opinions on the proposed projects.  “The goal right now is to simply listen,” said project manager Danny Ward.  The meeting gave attendess the opportunity to learn about the project, voice concerns, and ask questions. -- George Lamboley | The Cairo Citizen
